I drove up to Berkeley to have my hair cut by someone I trusted. I've only had my hair cut there 2 times, but both times it turned out nicely.

I usually get my hair cut at some cheap-o local place. I don't care much about my hair. I've had the same "Chinese-bowl-type" hair cut for ages. My hair has been called many things... ranging from a bowl... to a hat (what would be considered "bangs" extend straight out over my forehead giving the look of a hat).... to a toilet seat lid (well.. that's what my parents call it in Chinese).

The problem is the last time I got it cut at one of the local places, I think the barber was a n00b and I was her practice person. The front was uneven... seriously... it had a weird leftward slant. It wasn't even a straight leftward slant!! It had a bump. I mean come on... how do you mess that up?!? And the sides were totally not blended in. It looked like I had holes in the sides of my head. *sigh*

So when I went in today and sat down. The lady who was about to cut my hair... takes one pained look at me and says.. "Man what happened? Did you cut your own hair?" PWNED!!!

Anyways, all is good now. My hair is short and I look normal. Whew...

Birthdays...

Birthday surprise(s)

This last week was very interesting. There were a couple birthdays in our group. Our group is small, and I along with another coworker are the unofficial "recreation committee" for our group. This came about because we usually do stuff for people's birthdays.

So the first birthday was a guy who has been at the company for a very, Very, VERY long time. His employee number is in the single digits! Because he's been here for so long, he has quiet some seniority even though he's not a manager. He if often joking around and cracking jokes at people, which leads to some friendly "grudges". For example, we arranged a water balloon, birthday surprise for another one of our coworkers before (yes, I helped fill and supply the ammo ). After all the balloons were thrown... this guy goes back inside... fills an empty coffee pot with cold water, sneaks up behind the birthday guy and dumps it over his head! So this time, the guy that had water dumped on him wants revenge. He conveniently "suggests" that we do a water balloon birthday for the "elderly statesman". Not only did I oblige, but we had it planned out much better this time. I and my other reccom (recreation committee) partner in crime filled about 50 water balloons the night before. Then we drew out our plan of attack, which was as follows:

* One of his smoking buddies (they smoke, so they have to go outside in the parking lot to do it) would lure him out around 3pm.
* A couple people armed with water balloons would hide behind some of the cars before 3.
* The group that usually goes out for an afternoon stroll would head out with 2-3 water balloons hidden in bags or pockets, about 5 minutes after the "target" was in position.
* The strolling group would walk towards the "target's" left side.
* As soon as the strolling group had "blocked" off the left side.. the remaining people (about 8) would rush out the doors and charge at our "target" with the water balloons.
* Basically, when we rushed out... the people hiding behind cars, the strolling group and us.. would launch our "attack".

Oh man... we got him GOOOOOOD. He did make a good run towards his right and farther into the parking lot, but it was to no avail. He got pwned. Luckily it was a very sunny day so it dried off pretty quickly. Most of this was caught on a cell phone camera. Hahahaha Happy Birthday!

The second one was for a coworker that is the team leader for the project I'm working on. She's a good friend, but we decided against water balloons for her cuz she was nice. But... what we did do was fill her entire cube with balloons. We used the HUGE, strong balloons that can get to be about 16" across. We couldn't use helium because we wanted it to fill her cube and then all tumble out when she opened her cube door. It took soooooooo long to blow up all those balloons. I swear there were probably over 100 in her cube. I was getting so light headed, that I had to go out and buy a little hand pump. Although, the hand pump sucked so much. I expend more energy using that then just blowing it. So I alternated, used the pump to get the balloon started.. and then blew in the remaining air after it was "medium" sized. It took about 2 hours with the help of my "partner" in crime. So when the birthday girl came in the next day... she walks right into my cube, smacks me on the arm and says "I Can't get in!!" (*sigh*... for some reason they always assume that I'm the culprit of all these "evil" ideas. I mean where do they come up with these things? ;) We didnt realize it at the time, but it was a lot of balloons. She cleared out her cube by throwing the balloons out of cube and into the aisle. All the balloons filled up the aisle to about waist height!! Hahahaha, it was a very colorful and fun site. =) Many coworkers came by and say they wanted to take some of the huge balloons for their kids. Hahahahahhaha. Then mid-day... people were just bouncing the balloons into people's cubes and at each other (mostly me... why??? I don't get it. ) It was good times..... Happy Birthday!!!

The last one was for our director. It wasn't as crazy cuz.. you know we didn't want to get fired. Hahahha He's a cool guy though. We ended up covering his whole cube with green sheets and decorating the sheets as if it was a golf course. We cut papers to represent the holes, water hazards, and sand traps. Then we made little flags and put them in the holes. It was very nice and he liked it. Although it was quite difficult for him to get into his cube considering that we had sealed it off. Hahahahha Happy Birthday!!!

So that's it. Fun times.

Note to self... have a loaded Super Soaker ready when my birthday rolls around. We'll see who gets the last laugh. I hate trying to think up a title for my posts... anyways.... just thought I'd "document" some random things...

Last names...
I was eating with some friends and the topic of marriage comes up, which then led to talks about how women take their husband's last name. Well.... one of my friends knew of 2 stories that just took the cake on this one...

1st story.... There was an Indian girl named Hema. I guess she didn't date much, so her mother took it into her own hands to find someone for her daughter. The mother finally gets the daughter to agree to at least meet up with the guy. As the conversation ends... the daughter asks for the guy's name to which the mother replies, "Oh, his name is John Roids." The daughter immediately shot back,"NO way mother!" and walks away. hahahhaha... man that would have been quite a bummer.

2nd story... There was a couple, Robin and Peter, who were perfect for each other. They had one problem though... they didn't know who's last name to take. Why? Cuz her name was Robin Pan... and his name was Peter Hood. Seriously... what are the chances!??!? One in 6 billion?

Kindengarteners.....
Kindergarten kids are quite cute. I was helping them out with a counting and coloring worksheet this last Tuesday. One of the girls in the first group was really bright and very cute. She had colored 2 of the 4 boxes red, because there were 4 red hats on the worksheet. The she says..."Hey Mr. Ted.... I know 2+2 is 4." and then she immediate starts coloring the 3rd box and says.."Mr. Ted... did you know 3+1 is 4 too?" After coloring the final box... she looks up and says.. "I know what 4+4 is....... it's 8!" Then her eyes lit up and grew big...."Oh oh... Mr. Ted... I know what 100+100 is..." then she exclaims with a huge smile on her face... "It's twwwwo hundred!" HAHAHAHAHA

So she finishes the worksheet and runs off to do the other activities at another table, one of which is making Valentine's Day cards and stuff. (I say stuff, because they were just having a ball making completely random things with the fancy scissors and stickers and paper.) About 5 minutes later.... the girl comes back... and asks me how to write my name. I tell her it's just "T... E... D". She says ok... and runs away. Then another 5 minutes pass by and she comes back with one of their wooden building blocks (they are large hollowed out wooden blocks that have holes in them. Basically imagine a large wooden tissue box. Their blocks have slits where the tissues would come out.) The block has some paper sticking out of the slot. The girl tells me with a beaming smile.."Mr. Ted.. you have some mail!" I take out the paper and there was a Valentine's Day card she just made for me with my name in the middle!!! It just melts your heart.

At the end of the teaching session, I found out that all the kids had made Valentine's for me! They were all sitting down in a circle as the teacher gave me what they had made. They were very very cute, although sometimes quite confusing, cuz I had no idea what some of the things were. hahah As I was walking to the back of the classroom, a couple of the kids wanted to give me a hug before I left, so I knelt down to give them a hug. It was extremely nice, but before I knew it... all the other kindergarteners wanted a hug too and they all got up and dog piled me!!! I had been set up! Those sneaky kindergarteners. Hahahahhaha. It was awesome!! I was still upright, but I didn't want to hurt any of the kids, so I had to slowly try to hug them all and get up... luckily the teacher intervened (after she laughed of course....) and told the kids to sit back down. I had to leave after that.... and head back to work. Even though work has been crazy, that definitely made the day much better.

Valentine's Day.... and after....
A late Happy Valentine's day to all. I guess it's a day of mixed emotions for all. I spent mine at work, then went to the SAP Open with my best friend Benny to watch Andy Roddick and James Blake play. James' game was much more exciting to watch. The both won and will be playing in the 2nd rounds. I was lucky enough to get both their autographs on the tennis ball I brought. After their wins... they stayed a while to sign autographs for their fans.... I was standing there, squashed between all these teenie girls who kept professing their love to Andy. One girl even kissed him when he agreed to pose for a picture with her. I was just to the right of this girl. She tried to get his attention by screaming.."I love you Andy!! It's my 18th birthday!!!" I figured... hey... I can do that too. So the next time she shouted "It's my 18th birthday!!" I shouted right after.."Me too!!!" and held my tennis ball out for him to sign. Hahahahhaaha I guess it worked. LOL

It was much easier than when I tried to get Michael Cheng's autograph years ago. I was with my HS tennis team and we just watched him beat some guy. There were lots and lots of little asian kids there so he concentrated mostly on the little ones, signing their stuff. We had to find a way to get his attention. We tried calling his name in English and Chinese.... we also "pretended" to drop a ball and have it roll to him in hope that he'd sign it and give it back to us (which failed miserably, cuz some ball boy picked it up... had Michael sign it... and gave it to some other kid! DOH!). Finally, he did sign our stuff and we were happy... but man.... that was crazy.... little asian kids can be ruthless!! hahahaha

Then today, I went to play basketball during lunch with my coworkers. They were especially worked up. They were arguing about fouls and who got to move on to the winner's court and all these insignificant things. It was kind of annoying. These are grown men fighting over some pick up basketball game where we're only there to get some exercise. Finally... I exclaimed.."Damn!! Did no one get any love yesterday??!?" which seemed to shut them up for the most part. The rest of the games were great! =) hahahahhhah

Well..... that's about it for now. I should get some sleep. Not sure when I'll post next.. but if it's not before this weekend... have a Happy Chinese New Year everyone!
2007

Wow.... it's been quite a while since I last posted here. A lot has happened since then. It's only been 2.5 years, but it has been one crazy roller coaster ride. So a quick update...

I haven't changed much. I'm still a huge Kings fan and in the EE field. After graduation, I worked at Intel as a contractor to create a testbench for the wireless and Bluetooth noise interaction for a couple months. Then in August of 2004, I was hired by Xilinx as an IC Design engineer. It was a miracle just getting that job and I'm very thankful for the opportunity as well as enjoying every minute of my job. (As stressful and busy as it may be). Just getting that job is a whole 'nother story in itself, which I might retell here some day. At Xilinx I take 2 hr lunches on Tuesdays and Thursdays to play basketball at a local community center with some coworkers. It's great fun and wonderful exercise. I've also joined the Toastmaster's club at our company and have gone on to win the Humorous Speech contest 2 years running (also having winning from club -> area -> division -> district this year. This year's speech: "Women woes when wooing" ) Also, I've been teaching little kindergarteners through the JA program (www.ja.org) Those kids are so cute... they want to tell you everything. They all call me Mr. Ted and run over to hug me. Hahahaha They are so short, but it's quite cute. Oh yea, and I also finally met my online buddy, Christine! She is an awesome person and friend, and I'm not just saying that because she's from Cal. I feel very lucky to have made such a wonderful friend. Anyways, that's the general gist of my life these days.

It's now 2007. Happy belated New Year to everyone! My transition from 2006 to 2007 was the best ever. I partied it up at a club in SF (Ruby Skye). My first time at a club and second time out of the house for new years. Even though it was to the tune of $135, it was well worth it because of the food which I list for you below:

Passed Hors d’Oeuvres:
• Wild Mushroom Strudel Bites
• Mini Dungeness Crab Cakes with Cajun Remoulade
• Madras Samosas w/ Duck Confit, Peas & Potatoes
• Sundried Tomato Palmiers
• Parmesan & Black Olive Shortbreads with Chevre, Pesto and Parsley
• Truffled Potato Spring Rolls with Chives, Cream and Caviar
• Sesame–Peanut Chicken Satay with Coconut–Lime Drizzle
• Spicy Prawn Pita Bites with Chipotle Aioli

Stationed (Buffet style)
1) Traditional Saffron Scented Mediterranean Paella served in our customized 50 inch Paella Pan w/ Crab, Chicken, Spanish

Chorizo, Prawns, Clams and Mussels, Artisan Rolls & Butter

2) Herb Encrusted Filet Mignon w/ Port Wine & Mustard Sauce
• Duet of Roasted Potatoes with Shallots, Garlic and Parsley
• Hearts of Romaine w/ Caesar Dressing and Hand Pulled Croutons
• Artisan Rolls & Butter

We strategically positioned ourselves between the Filet Mignon station and the kitchen where the Hor d’Oeuvres were coming out and the stage. It was a great night out. Great food, great music, great company, great times. =) Definitely the best new years I've had.

Anyways, since then, 2007 hasn't been the best. A lot of crap happened at the beginning of this year that just pulled me down to the lowest point I've been in my life so far. Essentially, I ended up feeling lost , confused and quite alone . But it's ok, because now there isn't anywhere to go but up! (Unless of course the ground I'm standing on decides to give way... then I'll be going down but looking up. =P ) The silver lining in all of this was that it placed all of my attention and focus on myself, my fears, my insecurities and life. I also had several deep conversations about things we would never usually talk about with many close friends who I hadn't talked to in a long time. There were a lot of issues that I needed to face and deal with. I may get into some of those topics in a later post, but for now I will end with some goals I hope to accomplish and some funnies.

GOAL

I would like to retire in my early 40s, preferrable when I'm 40. By the time I am 30 I will have at least 3 patents, have an MBA from a top ranked university, own a place of my own, have travelled the world a bit, participate in a triathlon (preferably an Ironman one), be fluent and proficient (both spoken and written) in Chinese and English (and if time permits... Spanish), and know how to dance and cook. Not only will I accomplish these things, but I intend to be healthy and happy doing them. I would definitely love to have someone by my side to share all these experiences with, but that's not something entirely in my control.

Funnies

Job/women metaphor from friend's blog:
"A woman has a close male friend. This means that he is probably
interested in her, which is why he hangs around so much. She sees him
strictly as a friend. This always starts out with, you're a great guy,
but I don't like you in that way. This is roughly the equivalent for
the guy of going to a job interview and the company saying, You have a
great resume, you have all the qualifications we are looking for, but
we're not going to hire you. We will, however, use your resume as the
basis for comparison for all other applicants. But, we're going to hire
somebody who is far less qualified and is probably an alcoholic. And if
he doesn't work out, we'll hire somebody else, but still not you. In
fact, we will never hire you. But we will call you from time to time to
complain about the person that we hired"

Amusing story from friend's blog:

"So I went to Linens and Things today to get some bedsheets.
The [only] ones I use now date back to 7th grade and have been pretty
much worn out (transparent at some places). Only one slight problem:
I am a guy, and by definition, guys are not supposed to know much about
bedding. So I do some research ahead of time, and I find out what the
"thread count" is for, what a "fitted sheet" is (I just thought it was
called the thing with the stretchy things that prevent the sheet from
slipping...), etc. Many thanks to Grace for enlightening me on that.

I get to Linens and Things, and sight of it overwhelms me. It's
literally like a Fry's Electronics, but with chick stuff instead!
Freaking big, AND intimidating to me, a newbie at bed sheet shopping.
I wander around for 15 mins with the most idiotic, blank look on my
face. I see some things that look like fitted sheets, but they turned
out to be "duvet covers." What the heck IS a duvet cover anyways?
Finally a store clerk (kinda cute actually, I was checkin her out more
than the bed sheets for awhile) asks me if I needed any help, since by
then I really looked lost/confused/terrified/about to run outside
crying. She kindly showed me the sheets I was looking for, explained
to me what a "sateen weave" was (I thought it was just because the
sheet was made from satin), etc etc. So, I am now the proud owner of
Egyptian cotton, 300 thread count, sateen weave, fitted twin size bed
sheets. Stone color!

Now I know how a girl feels @ Fry's.... ugh."

Pachelbel rant

Thursday, May 20, 2004

Sigh... what a bitter-sweet way to end it all. I'm happy that I'm done with finals and all, but I'm totally disappointed by the King's 3-point loss to the Timberwolves.

It's 20 minutes before my EE 192 final and most people in the class are in the lab trying to study. But suddenly the TA asks one of my group members... "So, did you guys make paper airplanes in 152?" (Note; When you take CS 152... it's customary and a tradition to make paper airplanes and throw them at the ceiling in hopes of adding to the collection and getting it stuck up there. During our final check off... I think our group made about 50 perfectly-hand-crafted planes to be ready for flight. This was of course while we were waiting for our simulations to finish. ) Anyways, the whole room just kinda stopped studying and started flying paper air planes or playing bowling using white board markers for the pins and spools of solder as the "ball." It was a lot of fun and quite nice on the nerves right before taking our final.

So, I'm taking the EE 192 final which was longer and harder than the sample and his previous finals, and I'm so getting pwned. It's like he asks what are 3 things you can do to improve the following.. blah blah... and I can only come up with like 2. So frustrating... arg. Then after the test, I rush to La Vals to try and catch the remainder of the Kings game... only to watch the last 30 seconds... in which the ball clanked in and out on a game tying 3. But seriously why did Webber have to shoot the 3? Also, what happened to Peja? He just disappeared... no more awesome games. Why is it always like that... the Kings have to be eliminated in game 7? It's just heartbreaking. But it did get me thinking about "What if..." What if the Kings made their free-throws? What if Peja made his shot in game 5? What if Bobby Jackson wasn't injured? What if...

Then when I thought about my life, I realized there were too many "What if's." What if I tried harder? What if I studied more? What if I did this... or didn't do that? What if..? It was then that I recalled 2 quotes that I used to live by... but somehow seemed to have been absent these last few years.

1) Luck is when preparation and opportunity meet. (Or "Luck is the sense to recognize an opportunity,
and the ability to take advantage of it.")

2) The worse thing than rejection is regret.

I hardly used to believe in luck, I'd say I was lucky... but it was mostly because I worked hard and sacraficed to prepare and be ready when the opportunity presented itself. These days, it seems like I'm believing in luck and almost relying on it or something. Secondly, I never used to worry about rejections because I wanted to know the truth and then maybe improve myself. But now, it seems like I'm worried about being rejected so I don't ask, which is bad because now I regret not asking or doing something.

Another change I've noticed in myself is that I'm not as social these days. Even though, I'm on AIM I hardly talk to people (not to mention fewer people IM me). I used to be very, very good about keeping in touch with friends and hanging out, but it hasn't been the case this semester. I dunno what's gotten into me, but something has to change and soon.

Also, it seems like I've become more easily irritable these days. It's like people get on my nerves quicker. I don't get angry or start arguing or change my behavior, but I've noticed I'm more easily annoyed. I've always been laid back and just pretty easy going, so this comes as a little bit of a shock to me. I realized it when someone was complaining to me. I think it's great to get things off your chest and all, but if you're one of those people who complain a lot... about every little thing... and who always has to try top everyone else's crappy day... then I'm sorry but it's frickin' annoying. If you really have that many problems... then you need help... not complaining to others. I try not to complain to people. My philosophy is this: Complaining won't help the situation, and the person you're complaining to probably can't help make it better, so what's the point? You're only going to burden your friend that much more by telling them. Just find a reasonable and healthy way to deal with and DEAL with it.

So yea... which reminds me of the song that's playing on my Xanga site... It's called "The Reason" by HoobaStank. I think it's a pretty good song, and also it's pretty meaningful to me. This also reminds me of another thing... so it seems like someone stumbled onto my Xanga and left me 2 comments on my last post. It's great to meet new people! =) So, first I should correct myself by saying that Babooshka actually means grandmother.. and Matryoshka are those doll things. =) Thanks new Xanga buddy. Ok, so I haven't actually talked to her yet, but maybe she'll read my post again? Never know.. =)

Anyhow... I think I'm going to watch some Inital D. I love the cars and the music in the anime series. Besides the cars, the art work isn't that great, but it's still good. Also, don't look down on anime because there are some deep quotes and stuff in this series. When I have time, maybe I'll go through and document it. =) Yea, anime... techno... driving... and biking they can get me through everything.

Well, I feel like I have to end my posts with something interesting... so I leave you with a list of Axioms and stuff that I found in a post on a gaming forum. This is just the A's. Enjoy...

My last spring break as a college student was ok. It had its high and low points. The best days were Sunday (Bruce Almighty), Monday (Research + Worst Case Scenario Books) and Friday (San Jose + LBL) , but most the other days just kinda sucked. Wednesday was kinda depressing when the Kings were just totally owned by the Lakers. That was just a sad sight, even watching online on cbs.sportsline.com. My Kings will come back and redeem themselves on Sunday, April 11 when they play the Lakers one last time in the regular season. At least they beat the Wizards today. The Kings will have a tough remaining 9 games, half of which are against top Western conference teams (@San Antonio, @Dallas, @Houston, Minnesota, Lakers). Hopefully the Kings will get their act fully together and show what they are really capable of.

Also along the lines of basketball, college basketball is down to the Final Four of March Madness. It's definitely been a crazy season. Stanford was eliminated early on. (YES! mwahahaha) And Kentucky was also an earlier exiter. I was sad to see St. Joe's magical season come to a screeching halt when they lost yesterday to Oklahoma state by 2 points when John Lucas hit a 3-pointer with 6.9 seconds left. On the other hand, I'm glad that Duke and UConn made it through though. I've been rooting for Duke. I really want to watch the Duke vs UConn game next Saturday, April 3. It should be an awesome game. I know I'm going to visit my grandparents' either that Sat or Sun, but if it's Sunday, and anyone wants to watch the game... let me know.

Ok, that's enough for now I suppose. I just needed to get my mind off work. Sooo much to do and worry about lately. I'm getting pretty scared about not having found a job yet. There's only about a month and a half left before graduation. *sigh* I'm doing what I can and putting in effort... but it's not enough. I know I can do so much more and so much better. Looking back, there are somethings I regret and also should have reconsidered my strategy, but that's all in the past. It has made me who I am today, and I must learn from my mistakes and move on.

Oh yea... one last thing (Yea, I know this post isn't very coherent. I'm just dumping stuff out right now) For some reason, something doesn't feel right. I can't put my finger on what it is... something in my academic life? social life? family? friends? all?.... but I just have this feeling that it's going to come crashing down... and soon. It's one of those things where it feels like it's looming over you... but you can't see it. You can feel/sense it... but you can't see it. Well... whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right?

Blah... dang... apologize for the semi-depressing post. To make for it... I present the following word:

Babooshka
(For those who don't know.. it's those Russian dolls that fit inside each other... usually egg-shaped, and when you open it up... you see another one inside but smaller.... etc)

The word itself is such a great word to say. So just say it a few times and you'll feel better, guaranteed or your money back. Baboooooshka......

Go Cal!

Go Duke!

Go Kings!

Go Ted!

GoTeddyGo!

Babooooshka!
Sunday, March 21, 2004

Ahhh..... how could I forget!?!? I completely forgot that my sister's birthday was yesterday. Arg..... things have been so hectic and busy lately that I'm about to explode. Luckily it's Spring Break so I can at least take a break from school and concentrate on job hunting, and a little catching up. *sigh* I really could have used that ski trip, but alas... must work harder first.

Looking back, this week hasn't been the greatest. On Tuesday, I was hit twice and both times the cars drove off. Unfortunately, both cars sped off and I was only able to get the first characters on their car. Arg.... I was sooooo pissed. Luckily I was driving my "tank/BART mobile" cuz it protected me from getting hurt, and even now there isn't a scratch or crack on the bumpers. It's tough... but then it's also fully metal. If I wasn't heading to school... I so would have followed the second car and tracked him down.

Anyways, much thanks to those of you who have been there for me this week; X-box'in it to rest my mind, or telling jokes to ease the stress, or e-mails wondering if I'm still alive, or just being there to lean on and hug. You all know who you are. Thank you.

Now... back to work...
